Green is the new pink. Go Green. The lean-green-carbon-fighting-machine. Well, I made that last one up, but you get the point. Eco-friendly living is no longer a figment of the collective granola crunching, satchel wearing populous, but a stark reality for all of humanity. This includes those three-syllable entities that for so long stood on the other side of the fence, quashing the protests of hippies with megaphones and slick corporate speak - Big Business. Mega corporations are jumping on the green bandwagon like lemmings into the ocean, pumping millions into polished branding campaigns involving puffy white clouds and smiling indigenous peoples.

I know, that seemed a bit cynical, but the truth is some of big business is actually putting its money where its mouth is. The more recycling solutions the better- disposing of used cisco, used juniper, used IBM, used dell or any other used computer equipment should be an eco-priority.

Sun Microsystems- Sun Microsystems began the practice of openly posting their energy usage statistics for consumers to view. File Transfer - FTP - SFTP

Available in Lite, Home, and Pro editions, CuteFTP is a commercial FTP and SFTP program for Windows and Mac OS X. Security options include supporting SSL certificates and proxy servers. The software has a variety of configuration options including adjusting concurrent transfers and retry attempts, toolbar customization, logging events and errors during transfers, encrypting information (including login passwords) of stored FTP sites, and optional sounds to alert you of transfer events if you're not sitting next to the computer.

The professional version supports several backup features including folder synchronization, site backup, and a scripting / macro engine. CuteFTP Pro also handles bandwidth throttling, useful if other applications are accessing your network.

Conficker Again?

So, it looks like the Conficker worm is still not quite ready to go away. Ever since April 1st when the Conficker worm failed to do its task, as some claimed it would, people assumed that the worm was not a threat. Unfortunately, this is not the case. Some recent research has found that Conficker is alive and well; infecting up to 50,000 computers daily!

At this point, the worm has still not come through with a large scale attack. We here at Worldstart have written quite a few different articles about this bug, but with this new research I figured now would be a good time for a refresher on all things Conficker.

First, Conficker has many variants and many different effects it can cause on your computer. This can vary from absolutely nothing to loss of Internet connection and deletion of MS windows restore points. If you think you might have Conficker, you can check to see if you do. Click here to see how.

Second, Conficker can be removed. If you are having Conficker symptoms and you are unable to do MS updates or get your AV software to work, you can run a web based scan that is provided by Microsoft. This scan is free and you can get to it here.

The most important part of getting rid of a pesky bug is being vigilant. If everyone on the web can keep an eye out for signs of this worm, we can all fight to exterminate it.

Turn your Photos into a Calendar

Have you ever wanted to turn your photos into a nice looking calendar for display? Or perhaps to give to friends and family as a gift? Well, this is all possible with some simple steps. Read on and find out how you can do this. It's really quite a simple procedure - anyone can do it within one or two hours.
Select Good Photos
The first step in turning your photos into a calendar format is to select some good candidate photos. The trick is to select your favorite 12 to 15 photos and place them into a suitable folder. Usually, for such a selection you can go by themes, e.g. children, famous landmarks or even seasonal photos like winter or summer landscapes.Clean Up Pictures
Once you've selected the photos, the next step is to have them cleaned up. Remove any dirt or noise from the photos using your favorite paint program. If need be, you can also apply special effects to the photos using filters like sepia for a more interesting look.
Ensure Photos Are Large Enough
You then need to make sure that the photos you selected are large enough. Typically, if you intend to produce 8x10 inch photos, you need to have 1600 x 1200 pixels of resolution. I'd say that a 3 megapixel camera or above will be more than enough to produce such shots.
Upload to Photo Sharing Site
The next step is to then upload those selected and cleaned up photos into a good photo sharing site. A good one is Smugmug which has options for printing photos into calendars. Usually the price of the calendar is not much, and you can choose to have it shipped to an address of your choice.

I Think My Computer Is Overheating! What Do I Do?

Overheating can be a real problem to your personal computer. Laptops are overheated more often because they have rechargeable batteries that can get real hot after some time. You should just unplug your laptop when not using it to avoid overheating. There are some programs that alert you when the system temperature is too high.

Overheating is a constant problem with computers. There are a lot of people that think that their system is down because of some computer virus or some dangerous software but it is overheating that is usually the problem. The symptoms of overheating can be shutting down of the computer, computer restarting on its own, etc.

There are a few problems that can cause overheating. One of the coolers may not work and it causes the temperature to go high.

The computer can have up to three coolers, the power supply cooler, graphic card cooler and central processing unit or CPU. You can easily check if the power supply cooler is working, just look in the upper computer tower part located at the back of the tower and see if the fans are spinning. Other two coolers are located in the computer tower itself and you can check if those are spinning. If one of those is not spinning you might need to replace that part of the computer or repair it.

Dust can be a problem too. It is gathered on coolers and it may slow them down so they can’t cool the system enough to work properly. You can clean your coolers from time to time to prevent this from happening.

One other problem is smoke. If a computer is exposed to cigarette smoke, overheating can be a problem again. It’s because cigarette smoke has tar in it, and tar gathers around coolers making them work slower so they again can’t cool the system enough. When the temperature inside the computer rises above a normal and safe temperature, the computer will shut down as a precaution. In your BIOS you can choose at what temperature your system will shut down and you can choose to activate a temperature warning sound too.

A computer can have cd burner fans, pci slot fans and hard disk fans too. These are just a bonus and these kinds of hardware have them implemented sometimes.

When one of your fans is not working properly, your computer tower may be a bit noisy. That’s because dust or tar gathered on some of the coolers and it’s making them noisier. You should clean it on time because that cooler may get even more dust or tar on it, and it can stop working.

There are many types of coolers and their strength varies. If your personal computer has some strong components like for example a great graphic card, it can easily overheat, so you need a good cooling system. One other thing to watch for is the power supply. When you have good and strong coolers, you must have a high voltage power supply to support these coolers and the other components.

Fix the CAPS Lock Problem with Toggle Keys

The caps lock button, which causes everything you type to be in capital letters, is often pressed by accident. The results aren't life threatening, but having to retype a sentence or two can really tick me off. Many have looked all over the internet for a way to warn them when the Caps Lock key is mistakenly pressed.

It turns out that the answer is right inside Windows! Windows has a feature called "Toggle Keys". When the toggle keys feature is enabled your computer emits a beep when the caps lock or num lock keys are pressed, and a different beep when they are pressed a second time to turn them off. It's a feature I enable on all of my computers.

Turn on Toggle Keys in Windows Vista

Open Control Panel in classic view and double click on Ease of Access Center, which opens the window below.

Click "Make the keyboard easier to use", which opens the window below.

Halfway down you will see a checkbox and Turn on Toggle Keys. Click the checkbox to place a check and hit apply. Now each time you hit the caps lock or num lock keys you will hear a beep.

How to determine Your hard drive interface

1. Turn off your computer and unplug it from all electrical outlets. 2. Remove the computer’s cover. 3. Look for your hard drive which is one of the few devices that have data cables. 4. If the hard drive has a flat ribbon cable connected to it, you are probably using an IDE or EIDE interface. 5. If the hard drive has a different type of data cable connected to it (like a round one), you are probably using a Serial ATA interface.

Dry out USB flash drive from washing machine

Forgot to take the USB flash drive out of your pocket? Don't panic. First dry the flash drive with dry tissue, and then take out the pcb board from the case. Dry it with dry tissue. The last step is to keep your flash drive in front of a light bulb (range 10 cm). Leave it about 1-2 day and then make sure it is dry. Then put back in the case. It should work again.
